When you do not know what to do, ask:
What continues from this?
What am I becoming through this choice?
What suffering does this create?
What suffering does it prevent?
Am I acting from fear, or from clarity?
For ordinary days, a smaller practice,
if you want one:
In the evening, one question:
What continued through me today?
Not to judge yourself.
Only to notice.
Some people answer in thought.
Some answer on paper,
a sentence at a time,
written for no one but you.
And pages kept have a quiet power:
read again after years,
they show you that you were never standing still.
You were becoming the whole time.
Some evenings you will forget.
There is no one keeping count.
Begin again when you remember.
That is the whole practice:
one honest look, most evenings,
at what you are adding to the world.
