XII. Patterns

Most of life is not made of impossible choices.
It is made of repeated ordinary ones.

Repeated actions become patterns.
Patterns become character.
Character becomes consequence.

Some patterns stop being choices.

The drink. The bet. The smoke.
The screen that is never finished.
The snack that is not hunger.
The praise that is never enough.

Most people carry at least one.
Some are called addictions.
Others are called habits, or simply life.
The mechanism is the same:
a pattern that has learned to feed itself.

A craving promises relief,
and pays in repetition.

Repetition is not continuation.

A circle moves, and goes nowhere.

Most loops begin as shelter,
a way to quiet something
that hurt too much to feel.
No one is weak for having needed shelter.

And patterns, even old ones, can change.
Rarely all at once.
One repetition at a time:
refused, replaced, survived.

Some loops are stronger than will.
These are not undone by reading.
Reach for help. That is not surrender.
It is the pattern, interrupted.

And beyond the loop
is something the circle never had:
a direction.

Not a finish.
Just a day that went somewhere
the one before it could not.
A small line, where there had been a circle.

That is enough to begin.
