VI. Meaning

Meaning is not waiting somewhere to be found.
It is made, in what you do,
and in what continues from it.

Meaning may look like sitting with someone
through a night they could not have endured alone.
It may look like the unglamorous task you do so someone else’s day is lighter.

The meaningful life is rarely the one most admired.
It is the one that leaves what follows
a little better than it found it.

You live in what you change.

Legacy is not fame.
Legacy is what remains in motion
after you are still.

For some, meaning is the deepest question.
They need it answered, and look to others who seem to know.
Others search a whole life,
and the searching is itself their meaning.

But be careful who you let answer it for you.

Some who promise the truth of life
are only handing down a hatred,
teaching you to fear a face, a language, a border,
and calling that fear meaning.

Hate is not made by the people who carry it.
It is taught, passed from hand to hand,
dressed as truth so it will not be questioned.

So ask of anyone who offers you a meaning:
does this make the world I would want to live in?

A meaning that needs someone else to be your enemy
is not meaning. It is only fear, given a flag.

You are allowed to choose your own.

For some, it is enough
that the world is beautiful,
and that they were here to see it.
